Students Wrongly Think Their Hearing Is Normal

A study conducted at the University of Florida in Gainesville found that many college students who reported having normal hearing are actually already experiencing hearing loss.

Colleen G. Le Prell, Ph.D., from the University of Florida in Gainesville, and colleagues analyzed the prevalence of hearing loss in 56 college students (average age, 21 years) who reported they had normal hearing during initial telephone screenings. All the participants completed a questionnaire on medical history and individual exposure to loud noise. Hearing loss was screened for air-conduction thresholds below 25 dB hearing level (HL) at test frequencies of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 kHz.
